A Class I Biosafety Cabinet is a specialized laboratory device designed to protect users and the surrounding environment from exposure to hazardous biological agents during sample handling. It operates by drawing room air into the work chamber through a HEPA filter, effectively capturing fine dust, microorganisms, and harmful gases to prevent them from escaping.
Note: A Class I cabinet does not protect the product, only the user and the environment.
The cabinet functions based on a unidirectional airflow system:
Room air is drawn into the cabinet through the front opening.
The air is then filtered through a HEPA filter, removing up to 99.99% of particles ≥ 0.3 microns.
Depending on the model, the filtered air is either exhausted to the outside or recirculated.
This process creates a negative pressure zone inside the cabinet, preventing microorganisms from escaping and ensuring user safety.
